Missouri Business Alert (May 2014-present)

This summer, I was able to continue my interests in business and entrepreneurial journalism as a reporter for Missouri Business Alert, an online business publication affiliated with the University of Missouri. During my time at the publication, I curated and wrote original artilces on topics ranging from business to politics. I also ran social media efforts, and produced multimedia for the website. My work at the publication gave me experience reporting for a startup, and I really enjoyed my time in a new age newsroom.

Silicon Prairie News (August-December 2013)

In the summer of 2013, I helped promote Maker Faire KC, an event celebrating technology and innovation. The experience was my first real encounter with the entrepreneurship and maker community. I was immediately drawn to the excitement and energy of the participants of the festival, and I knew I wanted to continue to explore entrepreneurship.

I started work as a student editor and contributor for Silicon Prairie News in August 2013. The Omaha-based news publication covers startup, business and technology news in the Midwest. I wrote weekly articles about the startup community in Columbia, Mo., and I worked with a small team in Columbia and the larger SPN team to produce content.

“Square Co-founder Jim McKelvey Stops in Columbia to Talk LaunchCode” – October 2013

“iSelect Fund Promotes Venture Investments for Early Stage Startups” – October 2013

Maker Faire Kansas City blog (May-August 2013)

Maker Faire Kansas City was held for the third year in summer 2013, and I was fortunate enough to be a part of the event team. Through out the summer, I managed the event’s social media accounts, created an event app, wrote copy for the program materials and posted blog to promote the festivities. Below are a couple of sample blogs I wrote last summer.

“Meet the Maker: Super Awesome Sylvia” – June 2013

“ArcAttack Returns” – June 2013

The Maneater (August 2012-May 2013)

When I came to the University of Missouri last year, I knew I wanted to get involved with the student newspaper. I wrote a number of stories throughout the year, and I also worked a weekly shift as a copy editor for the Maneater in spring of 2013. Below are a couple of my favorite clips from the publication, including I story I interviewed Gandhi’s grandson for (dreams do come true).

“Grandson of Mahatma Gandhi Visits MU, Speaks to Student and Faculty Crowd” – April 2013

“MU Storm Chase Team Pursues Severe Weather” – September 2013

The JagWire (2009-2012)

Thanks to a wonderful journalism teacher and mentor, I became involved with journalism earlier in my high school career. I really can’t put into words how much my four years on the JagWire staff as a reporter, news editor and finally editor-in-chief changed and shaped my life and future career goals. Though my work for the JagWire concluded several years ago, I still am most proud of some of the pieces I wrote for the publication. I was able to spend meticulous time reporting and editing for every story. My senior year my journalism adviser convinced me to apply for numerous journalism competitions. In 2012 I was named Kansas High School Journalist of the Year, and I went on to be named a runner-up for National High School Journalist of the Year. J101 with Mrs. Habiger will forever be my journalism home and the place where I learned to see the beauty in the story within myself and every person and source I encounter.
